During 40 years as a criminal defense lawyer, Norman S. London, A.B. '52, J.D. '54, represented some of the wealthiest, most powerful people in Missouri and Illinois. In 1995, he accepted an appointment as federal public defender for the Eastern District of Missouri. After a federal judicial clerkship following graduation, London worked with Mark Hennelly and Morris Shanker, the leading criminal lawyers of the time. Later establishing his own practice, London was involved in many high-profile criminal cases. Although routinely opposing police officers, they sought his assistance, and he organized The St. Louis Police Officers Association, which he represented for many years. London has served as the Missouri attorney general's representative to the Committee to Review Criminal Laws of Missouri; as special adviser to the Committee to Draft Pattern Instructions in Criminal Cases, adopted by the Missouri Supreme Court; and as a member of the state's Urban Violence Task Force. He was elected to The Order of Coif, is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the national executive committee for the American Board of Trial Advocates, and former chair of the Bar Association of St. Louis' Criminal Law Committee. An adjunct professor at the law school since 1981, he has been listed in every edition of Best Lawyers in America, while in private practice.
